DVD's - The present and Future DVD's and Blu-Ray
By
Chris Elsey
DVD’s have been around for some time now. Developed by
Philips, Sony, Toshiba, and Time Warner in 1995 they
have been widely used around the world as a more reliable
replacement for VHS. There are of course other uses for
this technology such as data storage allowing 4.7 GB
to be stored on a single DVD, and 8.5 GB for dual layer.
Incredible when you think a CD can only hold 700 MB.
While the DVD has made home movies more enjoyable with
better picture and sound quality there was still more
room for improvement. This was when HD DVD and Blu-Ray
where born in 2006. Toshiba where the market leaders
for HD DVD but when Sony announced that the Play Station
3 was to have a build in Blu-Ray player the HD DVD was
doomed. In 2008 Toshiba made the announcement that it
was to stop the production of HD DVD.
Since then we have all come to recognise Blu-Ray as
the next generation of DVDs. A dual layer Blu-Ray
disc can hold up to 50 GB. So if you want this for
backup it’s great and of course you’ll get 1080p
from your Blu-Ray home cinema system.
Even though Blu-Ray offers better picture and sound
quality it doesn’t mean the end for the standard
definition DVD any time soon. However prices are
dropping on both players and Blu-Ray DVD’s.
